| Networking Key for Couple in Long Job Search | |
By Marcia Heroux Pounds
Leslie and Scott Frisch are not sure what they're doing wrong in their job search. The Tamarac couple, out of work for about six months, has applied to numerous postings online in their respective fields. They've also signed up with temporary agencies, hoping a short-time job would turn into permanent work. Like the Frisches, many South Floridians who have had long job searches are frustrated that the usual methods don't seem to be working. Experts say job candidates often rely too much on online job postings and applications. They fail to clearly define the job they seek; they don't actively network in person and online; and they are not energetic and ethusiastic enough in phone screenings or initial interviews. The Basic Types of Interviews You May Encounter | |
You will need to be prepared for - or at least aware of - a few of the more common types of interviews you may face during your job search. Here are but a few of them.
The standard question and answer interview. In this context, the interviewer will have a list of prepared interview quesions intended to assess your ability to do the job. In this interview, usually all the candidates are asked the same questions and it is left to you to find or create opportunities to place emphasis on your particular qualifications, and set yourself apart from the crowd. The resume verification interview.
In this case, your resume will be the focus of the entire discussion. Be prepared to clarify facts and statements on the resume, and give examples of situations you faced in a specific past job. Things like dates and duration of employment will be investigated, and you will probably be asked why you left former jobs, or what you liked and disliked most about past positions. This is an excellent opportunity to promote yourself, without the element of comparison to other candidates, but it can backfire if your resume is less than bullet proof. Full article... |
| How to Make Your Resume Rock, Not Flop | |
By: Debra Wheatman
Strong content with an aesthetically pleasing format is by far the best way to generate interest and get the interview. Having written and reviewed thousands of resumes (over 10,000 at this point!) I am still amazed by how many common errors are made on resumes and cover letters - the kinds of errors that will immediately send your resume to the trashcan. Making your resume 'reader-friendly' complemented by a strong proofreading (resulting in zero errors) will solidify your first place position in the interview line.
Opening Paragraph: A good way to help the reader understand the difference between responsibilities and achievements is to separate the information into a bullet point and paragraph style. The paragraph part should come directly under the titles of your positions. The paragraph should consist of 5-6 lines of information that provide a brief understanding of what you do; and for smaller companies, I recommend adding something about the business so the reader gains information about the nature of the company and industry.

| 12 Ways to Tell if You're Confident - or Arrogant | | By Carmine Gallo
There's a fine line between confidence and arrogance. This is especially true given both entail a strong belief in one's own abilities. When it comes to the results they provoke, however, that's where the similarities end.
Confidence is inspiring; arrogance is a turn-off.
Confidence gets hired; arrogance is shown the door.
Building confidence takes work; arrogance is simple. In fact, it's easy to come off as arrogant. Avoid these 10 behaviors so you don't leave the impression of being a Class-A jerk people would rather avoid instead of the confident leader they want to follow.

| 10 Phrases to Ban From Your Resume |
By Amy Bell
Whether you're out of a job as part of the recession's layoffs, everyone is taking a closer look at their resumes. Does it reflect your accomplishments and show your career progression - or hide the lack thereof? If you've been working with an older resume, take a closer look at your language: How many clichés do you have in there? Here are 10 phrases you should ban from your resume, and new, fresh ways to showcase your skills to put your resume at the top of the applicant pile.
1. "I'm a team player."
This is one of the most over-used clichés, so try to find a way you can show that you are this team player. Did you collaborate with someone or with a department to meet an objective? Put that on your resume instead of a vague, clichéd expression. Be detailed about your achievement.

There are a number of potential opportunity channels that job seekers can use to find more interviews, but most candidates only use just two or three. How many of these channels do you use in your job search campaign?

| Day in the Life of a Successful Job Seeker | | By CAREEREALISM-Approved Expert, Sean Harry
When I asked for input on what to write about in this blog, I received the following request from a reader:
"I would be interested in hearing about effective uses of time when you are looking for work. How much time should be spent on internet search engines, LinkedIn, attending network marketing meetings, having one-on-one network meetings, time spent with an accountability partner, exercising, prayer/meditation, time spent not working on the job search (I feel guilty doing this), volunteering, or other valuable uses of time. Alternately, what are poor uses of time. As I go through this process, I have been advised to do everything and say 'yes' to everything."
This is a GREAT question, I'm glad it was asked. Let me take a shot at answering it...
Going through the job search process is challenging. Because it's so new to most of us, choosing how to spend our time each day/week/month can be confusing. On top of the confusion there are several pressing issues, such as:
